Chapter V: "AT SEA ON THE TITANIC"

During his voyage on the Titanic, Frank was befriended by an American millionaire couple who were seated at the same table in the liners first-class dining-room. They had him send a message to his superior in Dublin, (called the Provincial) asking permission to remain on board for the remainder of the voyage to New York. (Fr. Browne was due to disembark at Queenstown.) The American couple would pay his way. The message was duly sent in the cable and a reply was awaiting Frank Brown when he arrived in Cork harbour. It consisted of five words:

Get off that ship - Provincial.

In consequence when the news of the sinking reached Ireland, Frank Browne was already back at his theological studies in Dublin.

Frank Browne's article in The Belviderian was illustrated with 12 of his own photographs and one picture courtesy of The Cork Examiner. The photograph below is the very last one which Frank Browne took of the departing Titanic shortly after 1:55p.m. on 11th April, 1912.
